Sunfish Sailing/Race Committee Instructions

Addendum to the Blackwater Yacht Racing Association Sailing Instructions

as approved January 8, 2005

These instructions are to be used in conjunction with the BYRA Sailing Instructions.  All BYRA Sailing Instructions apply except as modified by these instructions.

Registration:

Each person participating in a Sunfish series or regatta will register with the Race Committee at the skippers' meeting.  Skippers' meetings are usually held at 11:00 a.m. on the first day of racing.  Series and Regatta eligibility is based on the registered skipper and not on the boat.  Skippers must inform the R/C of sail number changes during a series or regatta.

Race Course:

The race course will be determined by the R/C based on the prevailing conditions.  The course will consist of Orange/Red balls for the turning marks.

Time Limit:

The time limit for a Sunfish race will be 1 l/2 hours.  If no boat has finished within this time limit, the race will be abandoned.

Starting Sequence:

"L" (black and yellow flag) – "Come within hail" – R/C will announce the course to the participants.  "L" will be removed one minute prior to starting sequence with one sound signal.

Sunfish Class flag (Warning) – raised at 5 minutes to the start with one sound signal.

"P" (white square on blue flag) preparatory – raised at 4 minutes to the start with one sound signal.

If necessary, hoist "I" (black dot on yellow flag) or "Z" (black, yellow, blue and red triangles) at this point.

"P" – preparatory flag removed at 1 minute to the start with one sound signal.

Start – Sunfish Class flag removed with one sound signal.

Scoring:

Low Point Scoring System as shown in Appendix A of The Racing Rules of Sailing will be used.  Qualification for series awards will be determined by Sunfish fleet consensus prior to the start of the year's racing. Currently, 70% of races raced are required for a skipper to be qualified.

Protests:

The protest procedure applies with the exception that flying a protest flag is not required.  A boat that acknowledges breaking a rule of Part 2 of The Racing Rules of Sailing must take the two-turns penalty (720 rule).  No other scoring penalty is available.
